UFC Twitter Bonuses – Using PR to Win

The UFC has implemented social media incentive’s for their athletes to help encourage fan interaction and to put a couple extra bucks in the back pocket of the fighters. In doing so, there are multiple awards available for creativity, increased followers and the percentage of the increase. In the third quarter of the 2011 year the Zuffa owned company announced their winners which included Joe Lauzon.

Interesting to note is how Joe “J-Lo” Lauzon won this quarters most creative Twitter campaign. He utilized his own website to distribute the newsworthy information about his upcoming fight at UFC 136 and left links so fans could instantly follow him. Here is an excerpt taken from the official UFC website.

Joe Lauzon

Lauzon used a multi-platform approach to scoop the MMA media and break the news of his UFC 136 fight against Melvin Guillard… with the blessing of the UFC, of course (no leaks!). He wrote a post on his own site with his reasons for taking the fight and his (ultimately correct) prediction for how it would play out, then tweeted a link.”

Joe’s approach to this social media twitter campaign reflects the best way for fighters to break news about their upcoming fights, injuries and latest announcements. Lauzon used his own website to not only pool together his followers but to also add new followers. This is a double win because Lauzon’s fans were visiting his website, which helps with the SEO of the official website, and then they are able to read his blog and then follow him right away. It’s a simple click, click, click process. See for yourself.
